Title:  Quianna L Simpson
Description:  A Columbus native, Quianna has been dancing all her life. She began African Dancing at age 7 with the African Beginnings Dance Ensemble, a program developed from the Youth Department of the Columbus YWCA and founded by Suzan Bradford-Kounta. Quianna has danced her way through life, from tap classes with the Girls’ Scots, Hip Hop classes at Beatty Recreation Center to becoming an East High School Tigerette; it’s her way of life. While away at college she groomed her modern and jazz technique with the Norfolk State University’s Dance Theater and “Hot Ice” Spartan Band dance line. At NSU she very much enjoyed attending the dance competitions and conferences, like Black College Dance Exchange, and has made it her duty to continue studying by attending dance conferences throughout the US. Throughout her college career each visit home provided her an opportunity to give back to the youth of the community through dance. From the “Schools Out” program with Columbus Parks & Recreation to returning to her high school Alma Mater to assist with the Tigerettes, she enjoys every minute of it. After graduating she returned home to work with the Focus on Collective Integrity Academy. There she was given the opportunity to found the dance team “Fiery Ice” for 6th through 12th graders. Most notably she is Assistant Director of Thiossane’s Junior Company, Program Director of Thiossane Institute, principle dancer, and instructor for Thiossane Institute. While working for this Non-Profit Organization she is able to be an ambassador for the arts, culture and the African Diaspora. Every Saturday she attends the same African dance community class she attended when she was 7, only this time she is the teacher. She also assists the junior company with school shows and programming where the company provides great entertainment while also intertwining Columbus’ Academic Content Standards to ensure it is “quality” entertainment as well. From 2006 to 2010 she worked in Thiossane Institute’s Cultural Arts Summer Camp where children are provided a safe and fun environment to self-express and explore with the arts; dance, music, theater and creative writing. The last two of the years she served as Director of the camp and received rave reviews for the annual summer showcase performance. She hopes to bring the camp back this year! Lastly, she enjoys her Outreach programs. She has been the “African Dance Teacher” at many schools and after-school programs such as; King Arts Center, Salvation Army at Livingston Elementary, Millennium School’s Explore after 4 and Columbus Afrocentric School and those are just a few.
